The short answer

Carry the originals for your licence route, plus your passport and the required entry evidence. Check each driver's dates and car class.

What's covered9

Car rental requirements in Japan have two parts: the legal right to drive and the supplier's rules for pickup. Prepare both before booking. A valid permit does not settle the payment method or approve another driver. Check the class and terms at your booked office too.

What to prepare before pickup

Keep the legal documents and booking terms in two lists. Start with the country that issued the licence. Your passport nationality may differ. The permit guide explains the visitor routes. It does not provide an automated approval to drive.

Original licence and permit route

Japan's permit route uses the qualifying 1949 Geneva Convention format. For certain foreign licences, the route instead uses a Japanese translation. Check the issuer and the actual document. Make sure its class covers the car. A digital “international licence” product does not prove that you have the required booklet.

Carry the original home licence with the supporting document. Inspect expiry for the whole rental and check each extra driver. A copy can help with reporting a loss. But it should not be the plan for passing the pickup check.

Passport, entry dates and identity

Toyota asks for the passport and evidence of the landing date. Its rules cover automated immigration gates and some entry histories. Read your supplier's current advice before travel. A boarding pass or residence card alone need not meet that check.

Ask the issuer and supplier to resolve a name difference or renewed licence before travel. If you have lived in Japan or made repeated visits, check the police rule for that history. A first-holiday example may not fit your case.

Payment, deposits and named drivers

Toyota's guide lists online card payment and payment plans at the desk. It also gives limits for some car classes. Other offers may differ. Check the method and any deposit rule in your own booking. Do not assume that a card or cash will be accepted.

Record the extra drivers under the contract. Ask whether they must attend pickup with their own documents. A passenger who may drive briefly still needs the right class and the supplier's acceptance.

Age, car class and supplier restrictions

Read the supplier's minimum age and car-class limits. Keep them distinct from the legal licence rule. A large passenger vehicle needs a category check too. Toyota and Budget publish those checks for their services. Read the ten-seater guide before choosing one.

Compare documented pickup conditions

Check Legal or contractual source
Recognised permit or translation Japanese police guidance and the authorised issuer
Valid period after entry Japanese police rule, with the supplier's evidence check
Original documents at handoff Actual supplier's listed and accepted rules
Payment and any deposit The selected offer and rental company
Additional drivers The agreement's named-driver process
Car class Licence entitlement plus supplier booking record for the actual class

Do not treat a general country checklist as a promise that each branch accepts the same payment or car request.

If a document is missing

Contact the issuer about a lost or incorrect document. Ask the Japanese licence office about legal entitlement and the supplier about release conditions. Keep the car booking on hold until the material issue is clear. A cover upgrade cannot change the driving rule.

FAQ: Pickup questions

Can I use only a copy of the permit?

Plan to carry the needed original documents. Toyota's document list and the Japanese permit format make the actual document check important. If an original is missing, seek the issuer's help and check supplier acceptance before payment. A backup scan is useful for loss reporting. But it should not be assumed to authorise pickup.

Does a broker booking record prove the rules are met?

The supplier still checks the driver and its pickup terms. Read those before payment, and bring the required originals. A broker booking is not proof that your documents or payment method pass. Ask the provider about any doubt before you commit.

Do extra drivers need the same checks?

Check each person who may drive, even for a short stage. They need valid documents for the car and inclusion under the rental contract. Ask the supplier how they attend and are recorded at handoff. Do not assume the primary driver's permit or payment method covers everyone else's entitlement.

Check the legal document route and the supplier's release conditions separately. Carry the originals, check the class and dates, and retain the accepted booking. That makes pickup a verification of a prepared plan.
