The short answer
A valid Singapore licence holder should check AA Singapore's permit process. Japan recognises the qualifying 1949 Geneva format.
Using a Singapore driving license in Japan usually needs the correct international driving permit. Plan it before the trip. Citizenship does not settle the document check. A digital licence display does not settle it either. Start with the current physical licence and Japan's rules.
Check where the licence was issued. This page is for Singapore-issued licences. Living there does not change the route for a foreign licence. Nor does holding a Singapore passport. Read the national document guide if your licence is from elsewhere.
AA Singapore states that the valid Singapore licence must accompany its permit when driving overseas. Pack the physical licence before you leave. Do not rely on being able to open Singpass at a Japanese rental desk as your only evidence.
AA Singapore names itself as the authorised issuer in its current guidance. It offers walk-in and online routes. Read the document list for the route you use. Uploading copies online differs from showing documents at a desk.
For the online route, AA asks for copies of the physical driving licence. It also lists the identity or residency evidence needed. Follow its photo rules as well. A rejected photo can delay the permit. Read the current list before sending the application.
For a walk-in visit, check AA Singapore's current outlet and document list. Do not use an old search result as proof of today's hours. Leave time to read the printed permit. If there is an error, ask the issuer to fix it before travel.
AA Singapore says it cannot issue this permit for a foreign licence. If that is your case, contact the issuer for the licence country. A Singapore mailing address does not change which issuer can help. Start with the licence rather than where you live now.
The Japanese permit route is based on the 1949 Geneva Convention. Check the booklet's treaty, issuer and stamped driving class. Look at the actual document rather than the application receipt. Keep the expiry dates of both licence and permit beside your planned driving dates.
A large passenger vehicle may need another class from a small car. Check the exact car with the supplier. The ten-seater guide explains why the advertised number of seats is not enough to answer the licence question.
AA Singapore gives its permit a one-year validity from issue. Japan also limits the driving period after entry. Both checks matter. A new permit does not by itself settle the rule after a long stay or unusual re-entry. Read the police guidance for that history.
Pack the physical licence, permit and passport together. Carry the entry evidence your supplier requires too. Toyota explains its landing-date check and advice for automated gates. Read the rule for your own rental company before you reach the desk.
| Pickup check | Action before departure |
|---|---|
| Licence and identity match | Resolve a name, damaged card or renewal issue through the issuer |
| Permit is complete | Check photo, details, class and signature directions |
| Driving dates fit | Compare both document expiry dates with the whole rental |
| Supplier rules | Read driver, payment, extra-driver and car conditions |
The checklist prepares you for the desk check. Staff still examine the originals and booked car class. A broker record does not replace that step. Ask about any doubt before paying.
Singapore drivers already know left-side traffic. But that does not make the rules identical. Read JAF's Japanese traffic rules. Pay attention to stop signs, railway crossings and pedestrian priority.
Make a first-day plan that fits your energy after the flight. Set up the route while parked and let a passenger handle later changes. For rural or seasonal trips, check the current road and weather notices. Familiarity with left-side driving is not preparation for ice or mountain conditions.
Deal with it before making a hard-to-change booking. Ask AA Singapore about the application or permit. Ask the Japanese police licence office about legal right to drive. Ask your supplier about its pickup conditions and the broker about booking changes.
If the answer is still unclear, use rail or another transport option until it is settled. For the next planning step, read renting a car in Japan and the pickup rules.
AA Singapore says to carry the valid driving licence with the permit overseas. Do not rely on a digital display as its replacement at pickup. Pack the physical card. Ask the supplier about any unusual document issue before payment.
AA Singapore says it cannot issue the permit for a foreign licence. Use the authorised route for that licence's country. Residence or citizenship alone does not settle the issuer. A seller's advert cannot override that rule.
Check the stamped class against the exact car class. A permit for an ordinary car should not be assumed to cover a large passenger vehicle. Ask the supplier before booking, and give the car details. If the class does not fit, change the car or use another transport plan.
Japan's validity and entry limits still apply. A current booklet does not give unlimited driving rights. For a long stay or resident history, ask the Japanese licence office which rule applies. Settle that before booking or driving.
For a Singapore driving license in Japan, plan the permit through the correct issuer and bring the originals. Check the car class and dates next. A clear document plan makes the later pickup decision much easier.
